Spider Monkey



 Spider Monkeys belongs to the family Ateles, and are part of the family Atelidae and subfamily Atelinae, they are also referred to as "New world Monkey". 

They are called "New World Monkeys" because of mainly their Nose structure. The "New World Monkeys"  (platyrrhines) are a group comprising five families and are distinguished by their broad nose which has a wide septum separating their outwardly directed nostrils while the "Old World Monkeys" have a thin septum.

This monkeys alongside other Atelinaes are found in the tropical forest of central and south America, and they play their role in our ecosystem mainly by aiding seed dispersal across the forest.

This monkey genus contains seven species, all of which are labeled threatened and the brown spider monkey labeled critically endangered. 

They feed on fruits and nuts primarily and will occasionally consume leaves, flowers, insect, eggs, barks and honey.

Each female of this monkey bears only one offspring on average every three to four years. They can live up to 25 years in the wild and 40 years in captivity and are threatened primarily by humans, jaguars and pumas but also by eagles and large snakes.
