The walrus is a large flippered marine mammal with a discontinuous distribution around the north pole in the arctic ocean and subarctic seas of the northern hemisphere . Adult walrus are generally recognized by their prominent tusks , whiskers ,and bulkiness . Walrus live mostly in shallows waters above the continental shelves , spending significantly most of their lives on the frozen ice, and are also sociable mammals .
